All settled
in the new house! =)
Do pardon my absence from this blog, internet is now finally up and running (had been accessing internet through BB prior to this). Btw got a TV from a colleague who happens to have too many TVs! Yes I'm very grateful for everything.
Anyway let me shed some light into what I've been doing recently.
Alex's birthday lunch at Sharkfin House, he's now officially quarter of a century old! And speaking of it, it was just an 'auspicious' day to have the celebration because Melbourne was under a hail storm attack on the very same day.
We stayed at the restaurant as long as we could hoping the rain would stop soon. Alas, we were greeted by torrential rain as soon as we stepped out of the restaurant.
So there we were, escaping from the heavy downpour like a group of asylum seekers, not a pretty scene I must say but funny nonetheless (I'm sure you've seen those photos on FB by now).

A happy Alex with his birthday present. Oh yea, speaking of birthday, in the midst of running pathetically looking for a shelter from the rain, Byron blurted "Alex, why must you be born today?!!". Haha, poor guy.

Cats, one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's highly acclaimed masterpiece, is in Melbourne! Went to watch it at Regent Theatre last Saturday. So what did I think of it?
It kills me to say this but I was on the verge of dozing off during the first half! Don't get me wrong, the songs were fabulous and I absolutely enjoyed them. There's just something about the plot that... well... How do I put this? Hmm, sleep-inducing?
I later found out I wasn't alone, in fact, the rest of them shared the same sentiment too! Phew, at least I wasn't the only weirdo who felt that. Anyway the second half was definitely much better.

Despite being drowsy initially, I did enjoy Cats especially the songs, simply splendid. And when 'Memory' was performed on stage, I could sense that everyone was utterly moved by the song, it was just hauntingly beautiful.

Chicago
Watched Chicago with Connie and Cherie last week. Finally! We have been waiting for this moment since the day we bought the tickets.
Went to yum cha before the show.
It was Connie's first time to yum cha! Seriously, I still find it quite unbelievable that she never had yum cha prior to this. Chinese food is very common in Melbourne and yum cha is very popular amongst Melbournians.

We also forced dear Connie to try chicken feet (also known as phoenix claws). Unsurprisingly, she found it grotesque.

As you can see, she was 'mutilating' the poor chicken feet. Anyway, I ended up eating most of them because Cherie was quite full by that time. Not that I was complaining, more for me! =) I honestly don't understand why some people are so disgusted by chicken feet, they're absolutely delicious! I suppose it's an acquired taste.
Speaking of yum cha, we were tucked in a corner surrounded by tables that the dim sum carts couldn't reach us. We basically struggled to get their attention, that really felt like a battlefield and I'm not exaggerating. Absolute spoiler!
And there was also this particular Hong Kong tour group that I must mention. So, some gravy slightly stained this man's white jacket as the waitress was serving the dish. The poor waitress got told off by them mercilessly over some almost non-existent stain (honestly we couldn't see it at all).
At the end of their lunch, the man and his wife even kicked up a big fuss and demanded a discount on the bill due to the 'stain'. Excuse me, where did they think they were?! This is Australia and not Hong Kong for heaven's sake! They shouldn't have said such mean things to the poor waitress although she's at fault. Suaku obnoxious tourists, so appalled by such attitude, wonder why they even bother traveling?
On a merrier note, headed straight to Her Majesty Theatre right after yum cha. It was just round the corner from Shark Fin House, how convenient!
Camwhored before the show started, hehe.
Speaking of Chicago, that reminds me. So I told the boys I was going to Chicago when I bought the ticket around a month ago. I was confused when they looked very astonished, didn't they know I love musicals? It wasn't until later when they asked how long I was going to be there that I realised they actually thought I was going to Chicago, as in the Chicago in USA! -___-
Love this huge Chicago poster! How could we not camwhore with it? We simply had to.
The main characters of the musical. From left to right: Velma Kelly, Roxie Hart, Billy Flint and Matron 'Mama' Morton.
The musical was undoubtedly amazing! The singing and dancing totally blew my mind away; and the lines were so witty that I was laughing my ass off. I was particularly impressed by how involved the orchestra was, imagine the conductor interacted with the actors! As if he's one of the actors as well.
I was also captivated by this one scene called 'Cell Block Tango' where the six murderers proclaimed their 'innocence' while narrating how they murdered their husbands/partners. Reckon the following lines from this scene are quite interesting and catchy.
"He had it coming, he had it coming, he only had himself to blame. If you had been there, if you had seen it, I bet you would have done the same."
"It was a murder but not a crime."
"So I took the short gun off the wall and fired two warning shots... into his head."
"Some guys just can't hold their arsenic."
"And then he ran into my knife. He ran into my knife ten times."
"I didn't do it but if I'd done it, how could you tell me that I was wrong?"
"I guess we broke up because of artistic differences. He saw himself as alive and I saw him DEAD."
As much as this scene was about murder, I found the women quite empowering, especially when they exclaimed "how could you tell us that we were wrong?".
Given the musical's popularity, it was full house unsurprisingly. But what's sweeter, we were sitting at the second row from the stage! Such wonderful seats. Felt so surreal sitting in such close proximity to the actors.
Chicago rocks Melbourne! Love it. =)
