That time of the year again!

So it is: holidays, eating, drinking, shopping etc, how exciting! And most importantly, catching up with friends whom you haven't seen in ages.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Lex, who moved to Brisbane months ago to pursue his PhD. Welcome back to Melbourne Lex! A round of applause please. =)

Went to Kenzan (yet again), had my usual bento box (yet again). Oh well, too much of a good thing... is still a good thing!

***********

Comes Christmas' Eve, had a few of them over to my place for dinner.

A few days prior to that, was cracking my head what to cook. Obviously I wasn't interested in slaving myself in the kitchen for the whole day, so nothing too complicated yet visually appealing would be superb.

In the end, I was saved by my beloved Nigella Lawson in the form of one of her cookbooks - Nigella Express! Btw it was my birthday present from last year, thanks for giving it to me guys!

Tadah! My masterpiece - potato pancakes with smoked salmon canapes! Aren't they pretty? =)

And this was my first attempt, gosh I'm such a talented cook!

Just kidding of course, it doesn't require too much talent to conjure these delectable babies. It's only a matter of whisking, cooking and assembling. And
voila! A lovely platter of canapes in no time.

See, that's one of the reasons I adore Nigella so much, she makes everything so easy! You could almost waltz through it and still manage to create something so delicious. Very important if you're throwing a party, believe me you don't want to appear too stressed over the food, that's just so unglamorous. (I even had ample time to do my makeup after the cooking)

Closer shot of my masterpiece, just because I'm proud of it! =) Btw I also cooked marinara pasta but forgot to take a shot of it.

This is totally random but does anyone watch 女人我最大? So I was watching it on YouTube earlier and this episode was about making simple party food. This guy was making something very similar to mine, so wicked! I suspect he must have his inspiration drawn from dear Nigella. Because potato pancakes aside, he also made a dessert which I've come across in one of Nigella's shows. Bravo! Great minds think alike.

The happy entourage.

Weichao's
kung poh chicken (宫堡鸡丁). Well done!

Loving my Christmas spread? ^_^

Lex the designated bartender of the night, in the midst of making vodka lemon lime bitters.

And the poor 'butler' had to pick up the seeds after that,
gua gua gua.

It's a feast!

Kings and queens! =) Happy us with our novelty gifts from the Christmas bon-bons. So what do we have here? Yoyo, miniature phone book and pen (do people still use this now with the advent of mobile phones?), keychain, bulldog clip (wtf?) and miniature poker cards. Oh well, I guess you don't call them novelty items for nothing.

Each bon-bon also came with a joke, a baffling joke to be precise, the kind of joke you're not sure whether to laugh or not. Byron even suggested to sue the company for such lame jokes! LOL

Champagne time. We were actually quite paranoid that we might get hit by the cork, so we stayed far away while Weichao 'bravely' popped the champagne. I know, we're such good friends.

But it was a false alarm after all. Nothing catastrophic happened. Check out the video if you like.

So it was a great night (it was mainly Byron talking half the time while we listened to his stories as if he's some kind of prophet, haha). Thanks for coming guys!

************

The next day, Christmas day. Didn't want to stay at home after church, so went to the city and caught up with Byron. Only one 'tiny' detail we overlooked - it was Christmas and most shops were closed, there was pratically nothing to do in the city!!

So there we were, two geniuses roaming aimlessly in a relatively dead Melbourne city. Definitely something to remember, never knew walking aimlessly could be so tiring! Having said that, one can never be too bored with Byron talking most of the time, hehe. Too bad I forgot to take photos of us to document our 'adventure' of the day.

************

On Boxing Day, Melbourne came to life again with all the crazy sales happening. Had you been to the ghost town-like city the day before as a tourist, you'd be so intrigued by this sudden change of vibe, mad shoppers everywhere!

Had lunch at this random Vietnamese restaurant somewhere in the city.

Wasn't too bad but reckon those at Springvale are much better.

Lex with his uber stylish hat, loving the feathers!

So I daresay I wasn't an impulsive shopper this Boxing Day (come to think of it, I was never one during previous Boxing Days), only bought a watch and it was 30% discount! *floating on cloud nine*

*************

Anyway, speaking of shopping, I was totally caught off guard by THIS.

So before I woke up yesterday, I was certain that I was only going to catch up with Brendan over lunch later in the day, UNTIL...

MY.LAPTOP.DIED.ON.ME!!!

Was turning on the laptop in the morning, unfortunately it wasn't turning on as usual. In fact, there were no signs of life. It was then I realised my loyal laptop of four years had died, how things changed so drastically within a night! (I was sure it was working well the night before)

Farewell my Acer, you were a trooper and you have served me well.

On a lighter note, bought a spanking new laptop from Dick Smith yesterday, Brendan scored me a pretty sweet deal too! So this is the story, was definitely not expecting to buy a new laptop before yesterday. But shits happen, what can you do? At least I have back-uped important documents on my external hardisk, so that's a relief. Not the songs though, damn! T_T How do I go about to retrieve the songs?

And yes, I'm now happily typing away from my new HP! =)

Had dinner at Pancake Parlour before catching the movie Old Dogs.

Anyone seen it yet? Very funny, I laughed so much that my jaws went numb! Apparently it has some very negative reviews, not sure why though. At least I enjoyed it.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas, here's to another year filled with happiness and laughter! =)

So,

Sookie is in town!!!!

Went shopping with her last Saturday, brought her to Kenzan for my favourite bento box. Alas, they sold out yet again! Geez, seems like everyone loves it as much as I do. If only you could see the invisible daggers I grudgingly shot at those who were savouring their bento boxes while I was drooling over it, haha...

Ended up with ebi tan soba, just because I didn't know what else to order. Plus it's not too shabby. Btw I'm not used to seeing my forehead all exposed (decided to wear my fringe up for a change)! Perhaps I've been so used to fringe.

Time for a pick-me-up after shopping. Can you guess where we went?

Was going to bring Sookie to Lindt Cafe but they close too early (5pm), so ended up at Max Brenner. Strange but seems like Max Brenner is always the 'rebound chocolatier', haha! That can't be helped, Lindt is simply the best in Melbourne!!

Had a banana milk chocolate frappe while Sookie had hot chocolate.

So, Sookie bought something very interesting, care to know?

A kitty ears hairband! Isn't that cute?!! Found it in a quirky little store in Melbourne Central.

This is creepy but think I actually looked like a feline here, yikes! Can I score a role in Cats then? LOL

FYI: I managed to get all my Christmas shopping done! Have wrapped all the presents and written the cards, even I impressed myself. =)

Failed attempt in Christmas shopping

All thanks to a distraction in the form of none other than yours truly. -___-

So decided it's time I got off my lazy bum and started Christmas shopping, which was exactly what I set out doing today.

After having my lovely lunch at Kenzan (I had the-best-bento-box-in-Melbourne, finally, after they cheated my feelings the last time), I embarked on a Christmas shopping mission armed with a non-corporeal long list of people whom I need to buy presents for.

Seconds later, I was shamelessly immersed in a delirious shopping frenzy for myself and completely forgot about THE mission!

Gua gua gua...

Oh well, the bright side is I have bought myself some Christmas gifts which consisted of two pairs of shoes, Bobbi Brown cosmetics, two tops and got my eye brow tweezed by Benefit (which was an impromptu decision). Can now semi-cross myself off the list, hehe. What? I haven't even bought myself dresses yet, so can't completely cross myself off the list. =p

Guess I'll shop for others tomorrow then. *smugly*

********

So Ying, hate to say this but guess I really do have a knack for attracting weirdos, sigh. Came across two on my way back earlier.

Dear douchebags, not all Asians have a thing for anglo-saxons, myself included. Please find some other bimbo Asian girls and leave me alone. And no, I do NOT find your compliments flattering.

Shopping

Went shopping with Wing Sze last week. Before we embarked on the 'mission', brought her to one of my favourite Japanese restaurants, Kenzan.

Simply because I was craving their special bento box! The best bento in Melbourne I reckon. Looks delicious, doesn't it? Unfortunately, they cheated my feelings.

So I ordered two bento boxes and while I was waiting blissfully for it, the waitress came with a shocking message - they could only make ONE bento box!!!! There goes my much anticipated bento. T_T

Ended up ordering something else and let Wing Sze have the bento as she never tried it before.

She was undoubtedly very pleased with it while I was drooling over it. Damn, so going to sue Kenzan for cheating my feelings! Haha.

So what did I end up having?

Ebitan soba. Quite nice I must say except for one tiny thing - if they could separate the tempura and soba. It's just my personal preference, don't really fancy soggy batter.

Anyway, Wing Sze needed a dress to attend a wedding next month, so off we went for dress-hunting at Bridge Road. After a tiresome search, we finally found the dress! A very gorgeous dress, simple yet elegant. I shan't elaborate too much, ask her about it if you like. =)

So what better to reward ourselves for our fruitful shopping spree than a chocolate treat? Nothing (at least there was nothing better than it at the time). Went to Max Brenner after that, wanted to go to Lindt Cafe originally but alas they closed too early.

Wing Sze was happy with her tiramisu.

My chocolate souffle, simply to die for! Hmm, think Leong Seh Tat is going to kill himself seeing this, he claims my blog is overdose with chocolate. Even if that's true (which I beg to differ), what's wrong with chocolate overdose anyway? Hehe.

Needless to say, I was very delighted with my chocolate souffle, one of the best I've tried. And do not underestimate its size, it may be tiny but it's more than enough.

So it was a very enjoyable day that ended bizarre yet interesting, which I shan't even go into it. All I can say is this - good things happen when you least expect it. And for that, I'm very grateful. =)

Yay!

So it didn't rain on Sunday, much to my delight.

Initially went out with great reluctance (had to go out for Christmas shopping but dreaded the rain) but eventually I was pleased that I did go out because it was such a gorgeous day!

Headed to the city right after church and met up with Miss Audrey Rubianto for lunch. Ying was somewhere in the city at the time as well but too bad she couldn't join us, she was busy being a 'tourist guide', hehe.

Went to... err... can't remember the name, hey Audrey what's the restaurant called again? Anyway, it's in Melbourne Central, very near Max Brenner.

Chefs in action! =)

Audrey's chicken burger. One question though, what the heck is the chicken wing tip doing there?!! Don't get me wrong, I love to eat it but it somehow feels out of place to have one in a burger, don't you reckon?

Audrey is loving her chicken burger, hehe.

Tadah! My seafood risotto. It was delicious!

Ok, I lied. It's NOT delicious but it's,

SO.DELICIOUS.CAN.FAINT!!!!

^_^

Ok, I may have slightly exaggerated but honestly, it was excellent. Think I'll try their duck risotto next time, sounds very interesting.

I was one happy customer even before I started gorging the food! Btw, I just realised that uncle behind me was in the midst of ordering his food, hehe.

So Christmas shopping is one tedious affair. Audrey and I were pratically walking in circles (for an awfully long time) in an attempt to hunt for the perfect gifts that it was time for an afternoon pick-me-up.

And what could be better than Koko Black? Had my usual iced chocolate and it was simply heavenly. Btw love the background especially the angels, so vintage! (You should know by now that I adore vintage items, hehe)

Anyway, back to Christmas shopping, I've finally bought my Kriss Kringle gifts! And yes, that includes your pressie too Mel but I'm not telling what I got for you, haha.

Speaking of gifts, guess who got an early Christmas pressie?

None other than yours truly! ^^ Got this from dear Cherie, thanks babe!

And,

a card from dear George at church the other day, how flattering. =)

Anyway, see if you can spot an interesting 'phenomenon' in the following photos.

Notice anything unusual?

Did you spot it?

So assuming you did (think it's quite obvious), it's my name!! 'Ammie' very hard to spell meh? Haha. But it's alright, not that I mind, it's the thought that counts. =) Just thought it's interesting.

Oh yea, I still haven't opened Cherie's pressie yet (miraculously). When do you reckon I should open it? I'm getting very curious and impatient (don't think patience is one of my virtues, hehe)!

It came and went,

my wonderful weekend, since Friday night. Let me do you the honour to recap what happened since Friday.

FRIDAY:

Went to Chadstone straight after work on Friday because both Cherie and I were in the mood to shop (especially Cherie, hehe). But guess what? We were in for a HUGE disappointment because Chadstone has to be one of the most boring places in Melbourne to shop! We ended up aimlessly scanning every corner for some 'inspiration' to shop but to no avail (I did buy some Clinique items but skincare product don't count!). It wasn't until later that Cherie exclaimed "You know, we should have gone to DFO!"

Oh well, tough luck but there's always next time. =)

Cherie, while waiting for the dessert at Sweet Temptations.

My chocolate temptation slice.

Cherie's tiramisu.

And we were in for another disappointment again! These cakes (particularly mine) were anything but good! Ok, perhaps I'm being too critical, mediocre maybe? But 'mediocre' is not enough to tempt me and to think that mine was 'chocolate TEMPTation slice', how ironic! -__-

Damn, and I was so looking forward to the dessert, bloody cheated my feelings!

SATURDAY:

So decided to go shopping on Saturday to make up for the previous night. Was initially planning to shop alone until Miss Audrey Rubianto asked if I wanted to go out. Even sweeter, had a shopping kaki! =)

Went to Red Silk for lunch mainly because we haven't gone there in ages.

Audrey Rubianto! Hehe...

Frankly, I thought that their Christmas deco was very pretty. Sorry, should have taken a few more shots of the deco to echo my description, oh well...

I love my mango bubble tea!

Went shopping after that blah blah blah, ok I shall spare you the 'boring' shopping bits (of course it's not boring, I'm just too lazy to narrate), now let's go straight to dessert shall we? Haha...

My baked cheesecake and Audrey's mango cheesecake from Greco. Hmm, I actually thought it should be called mango passionfruit cheesecake (see them on the cake?), poor passionfruit, totally usurped by the mango, wahaha! Ok, enough nonsense.

Anyway, this is what a proper dessert ought to be. They are simply heavenly! *drools* Eat your heart out Sweet Temptations! *evil laughter*

Mine, all mine! (No, contrary to 'popular belief', I ONLY ate my baked cheesecake, this is just for photographic purpose, hehe) Btw, according to Audrey, you'll actually be charged more if you dine in Greco, so we actually bought the cakes and ate them at the nearby food court in Crown, pandai tak? Haha...

And of course I was very pleased by the end of the day! =)

SUNDAY (today):

Had a BBQ lunch at church earlier today and I'm so glad I went because I made so many wonderful new friends! Hmm, that reminds me, I didn't take any photos although I brought along my camera, was too busy talking, haha.

Was chatting a lot with Elizabeth and was quite moved when she talked about her late husband (whom, I gather, must be an excellent lawyer. think the beauty queen murder case in the 80's, yes he's the lawyer who won the case). She recently attended a memorial dedicated to her late husband organised by his former colleagues. I guess, great men will always be missed and remembered even though they are long gone. She must be very proud of him, I know I would if I were her...

Anyway, she was very kind to invite me over to her place for Christmas. Think I'll drop by for a visit because I'm fond of her. =)

Btw, before I knew it, I was recruited by Cynthia to join their play/concert next year. Not sure what character I'll be playing but I'm very excited about it, it's been a while since I was last involved in a play after all. Gosh how exhilarating!

And Charlie will be going for an operation next week, might not see him until after Christmas, oh how I'll miss his cheerful laughter! May God bless his good soul.

Went to the city shortly after the BBQ and did some shopping. So it seems like another shopping spree weekend again and no, I shan't even tell you what I bought. But let me just briefly show you my most prized (literally) buy of the week:

p.s. And I still haven't bought my Kriss Kringle gift yet! Gosh what to buy? Arghh....
